This project explored the development concept of retention and re-use. This former Cheesecake Shop was converted to a five apartment and one shop development.
The inherent value in retaining as much of the original structure as possible in order to deliver a design is the basis of being sustainable. The most sustainable design is a building which is never demolished. Developments too easily clear a site under the misguided premise that it costs too much to keep and alter a structure. We don’t agree. The key to making retention work is good design and practical, buildable solutions.
The existing building was kept largely intact including the roof. A two storey addition to the eastern side offered the opportunity to design four, two level two bedroom apartments. A larger two storey townhouse occupies the rear of the lot. The existing suspended concrete floor slab accommodated all on-site parking below.
The design and finish aimed to offer a low cost and therefore affordable proposition for occupants.
